GREEK SHEPERDESS COAT
Subject

Description
The coat is entirely handmade in the mountain region of Peloponnesian. It was most likely made sometime between 1900 and 1920 for a lady's wedding. It was packed away in a trunk, carried on a donkey to the groom's village, unpacked, repacked back into the trunk and was seldom taken out of the trunk after that. It is in incredibly good shape for something that age. The woman who owned the coat said they were still worn in the 1930's to the 1960's. She doesn't remember men wearing them but doesn't recall what men wore. The most important feature of the coat, she said, is that it is sleeveless. Being sleeveless shows the arms of the ladies blouse. On special occasions the ladies would wear their best white blouse with lots of beautiful embroidery on the sleeves and the coat allowed the fine embroidery to be shown.
