GREEK RESTAURANTS
Description
In the east Queen Anne neighborhood in Seattle , a house perched above Dexter Avenue was home, beginning in 1979 to a Greek-Croation-Italian partnership called Adriatica. The panoramic view across Lake Union to the east was unbeatable once you climbed the stairs (until an office building got in the way) was almost as good as the panorama from Canlis. The food, by John Sarich, brought new Mediterranean flavors and techniques to Seattle. The menu included selections from Greece, as well as Italy and Yugoslavia, and was the first to serve kalamari (squid), using a recipe from Jim’s mother Eleni’s kitchen. Jim Malevitsis had first tasted the delicacy in Kavala, Greece. The container in which the squid was packaged had the words “squid bait” on it as squid had previously been used only for that purpose. Adriatica itself fell into disrepair and closed for good in 2001. Photo courtesy Malivetsis family
