Title
Clara Nicon's World War II Scrapbook
Subject
World War II
Description
This scrapbook was assembled by Clara S. Nicon and contains signatures, stories and photos of men, almost all Greek who served in World War II and visited the home at 4326 4th Ave NE in Seattle where Clara lived with her husband, Spiro, and her sister and Brother-in-law, Effie and Pete Wells. The Wells’ son, Nicholas was killed in the sinking of the Submarine ESCOLAR in 1945
Inside the front cover is a bound collection of articles from the Seattle Post Intelligencer beginning with the bombing of Pearl Harbor (dated December 8, 1941) and ending with victory in Japan (dated September 3, 1945.
The first three pages of the scrapbook contain signatures that were apparently entered by young men who visited the home. Following are pages of photos, articles and documents related to each of the service men and women who were known to the Wells and Nicon families.
The last few pages are devoted to the USS Crenshaw which was in for repairs at the south end of Lake Union in Seattle. Crew members would often be found at Spins (Spiro Nicon) Tavern, just south on Fairview Avenue. Very close friendships were established and the Nicon family even rode on the Crenshaw when it departed through the Hiram S. Chittenden locks.
